DAY 1
A guard came to the prison shoe-shop, where Jimmy Valentine was assiduously (অ্যাসিডুয়াসলি – একনিষ্ঠভাবে) stiching uppers (আপারস – জুতোর উপরিভাগ), and escorted (এসকর্টেড – সঙ্গে করে নিয়ে যাওয়া) him to the front office.
একজন রক্ষী জেলখানার জুতো তৈরির কারখানায় এল, যেখানে জিমি ভ্যালেনটাইন অত্যন্ত যত্নসহকারে জুতোর উপরের অংশ সেলাই করছিল, এবং পাহারা দিয়ে তাকে সামনের অফিসে নিয়ে গেল।
There the warden (ওয়ারডেন – কারাধ্যক্ষ) handed Jimmy his pardon (ক্ষমাপত্র), which had been signed that morning by the governor (গভর্নর – রাজ্যপাল).
সেখানে কারাধ্যক্ষ জিমির হাতে তার ক্ষমাপত্রটি তুলে দিলেন, যেটা সেইদিন সকালে গভর্নর স্বাক্ষর করেছিলেন।
Jimmy took it in a tired kind of way. He had served nearly ten months of a four year sentence (সেনটেন্স – শাস্তি).
জিমি ক্লান্ত ভঙ্গিতে সেটা নিল। সে চার বছর কারাদন্ডের ইতিমধ্যেই দশ মাস কারাগারে কাটিয়েছে।
He had expected (এক্সপেক্টেড – আশা করা) to stay only about three months, at the longest. When a man with as many friends on the outside as Jimmy Valentine had is received in the stir it is hardly worth while to cut his hair.
সে আশা করেছিল যে তাকে হয়তো বড়োজোড় তিন মাস কারাগারে থাকতে হবে। যখন একজন মানুষ যার বাইরে অনেক বন্ধুবান্ধব আছে জিমি ভ্যালেনটাইনের মতো তখন তাকে জেলখানায় ঢোকালে তার চুল স্পর্শ করা সত্যিই সম্ভব নয়।
“Now, Valentine,” said the warden, “you’ll go out in the morning. Brace up (ব্রাস আপ – মনে জোর আনা), and make a man of yourself. You’re not a bad fellow at heart. Stop cracking (ক্র্যাকিং – ভাঙা) safes (সেফস – সিন্দুক), and live straight (স্ট্রেইট – সোজা).”
“এখন, ভ্যালেনটাইন,” কারাধ্যক্ষ বলল, “তুমি সকালেই বাইরে যাচ্ছ। মনে সাহস আনো, আর নিজেকে মানুষের মতো মানুষ করে তোলো। হৃদয়ের দিক থেকে তুমি মোটেও খারাপ মানুষ নও। সিন্দুক ভাঙা বন্ধ করো, আর সোজা জীবনযাপন করো।”
“Me?” said Jimmy, in surprise. “Why, I never cracked a safe in my life.”
“আমি?” জিমি বিস্ময় প্রকাশ করে বলল। “কেন, আমি তো জীবনে একটা সিন্দুকও ভাঙিনি।”
“Oh, no,” laughed the warden. “Of course not. Let’s see, now.
“ওহ, না,” কারাধ্যক্ষ হাসলেন। “অবশ্যই নয়। চলো তবে, এখন একবার দেখে নেওয়া যাক।
How was it you happened to get sent up on that Springfield job?
তোমার সাথে কী ঘটেছিল যে তোমাকে স্প্রিংফিল্ডের কেসে জেলে পাঠানো হল?
Was it because you wouldn’t prove an alibi for fear of compromising somebody in extremely high-toned society?

“Me?” said Jimmy, in surprise. “Why, I never cracked a safe in my life!”

“Take him back, Cronin!” said the warden, “and fix him up with outgoing clothes. Unlock him at seven in the morning, and let him come to the bull-pen (বুল-পেন – হাজত). Better think over my advice, Valentine.”
“ওকে নিয়ে যাও, ক্রোনিন!” কারাধ্যক্ষ বলল, “আর ওকে বাইরে যাওয়ার পোষাক পরিয়ে দিও। সকাল সাতটার সময় ওর তালা খুলে দিও, আর ওকে হাজতে নিয়ে এসো। আমার উপদেশটা একবার ভেবে দেখো, ভ্যালেনটাইন।”Time & Calendars
At a quarter past seven on the next morning Jimmy stood in the warden’s outer office.
পরের দিন সকাল সওয়া সাতটায় জিমি কারাধ্যক্ষের বাইরের অফিসে এসে দাঁড়াল।
He had on a suit of the villainously (ভিলেনাসলি – বেমানানভাবে) fitting, ready-made clothes and a pair of the stiff (স্টিফ – শক্ত), squeaky (স্কুইকি – ক্যাঁচ ক্যাঁচ শব্দ হওয়া) shoes that the state furnishes (ফারনিশেস – প্রদান করা) to its discharged (ডিসচার্জড – মুক্তিপ্রাপ্ত) compulsory (কমপালসারি – আবশ্যক) guests.
তার পরনে ছিল বেয়াড়া রকমের বেখাপ্পা, রেডিমেড পোষাক আর এক জোড়া শক্ত, ক্যাঁচক্যাঁচ আওয়াজ তোলা জুতো যেগুলি সরকার তার ছাড়া পাওয়া রক্ষনীয় অতিথিদের জন্য বরাদ্দ করে।
The clerk handed him a railroad ticket and the five-dollar bill with which the law expected him to rehabilitate himself into good citizenship and prosperity.
কেরানিটি তাকে একটা রেলের টিকিট আর পাঁচ ডলার নোট দিল যেটা দিয়ে, আইনরক্ষকেরা মনে করেন, সে সুনাগরিকত্ব ও সমৃদ্ধির পথে নিজেকে পুনর্বাসিত করতে পারবে।
The warden gave him a cigar, and shook hands. Valentine, 9762, was chronicled on the books, “Pardoned by Governor,” and Mr. James Valentine walked out into the sunshine.

Disregarding the song of the birds, the waving green trees, and the smell of the flowers, Jimmy headed straight for a restaurant.

From there he proceeded leisurely to the depot. He tossed a quarter into the hat of a blind man sitting by the door, and boarded his train.
সেখান থেকে সে ধীরেসুস্থে এগিয়ে গেল রেলস্টেশনের দিকে। সে এক সিকি ছুঁড়ে দিল একটা অন্ধ মানুষের টুপিতে যে বসেছিল দরজার পাশে এবং ট্রেনে চড়ে বসল।
Three hours set him down in a little town near the state line. He went to the cafe of one Mike Dolan and shook hands with Mike, who was alone behind the bar.
তিন ঘন্টা বাদে সে একটা ছোট্ট শহরে নামল যেটা দুই প্রদেশের সীমানার কাছে অবস্থিত ছিল। সে মাইক ডোলান নামে একজনের কফি দোকানে গেল এবং মাইকের সাথে করমর্দন করল যে বারের পিছনে একাই ছিল।
“Sorry we couldn’t make it sooner, Jimmy, me boy,” said Mike. “But we had that protest from Springfield to buck against, and the governor nearly balked. Feeling all right?”
“দুঃখিত এর থেকে আগে আমরা ব্যাপারটা মেটাতে পারলাম না, জিমি,” মাইক বলল। “কিন্তু আমরা স্প্রিংফিল্ড থেকে সরাসরি প্রতিবাদের মুখে পরেছিলাম, আর গভর্নর তো প্রায় বেঁকে বসেছিলেন। ভালো আছো তো?”
“Fine,” said Jimmy. “Got my key?”

He got his key and went upstairs, unlocking the door of a room at the rear.
সে তার চাবিটা নিল আর সিড়ি দিয়ে উপরে চলে গেল, পেছনের দিকের একটা ঘরের দরজার চাবি খুলল।
Everything was just as he had left it.
সমস্তকিছুই একই ছিল যেমনটা সে ছেড়ে চলে গেছিল।
There on the floor was still Ben Price’s collar-button that had been torn from that eminent detective’s shirt-band when they had overpowered to arrest him.
মেঝেতে এখনও পড়ে রয়েছে বেন প্রাইসের কলারের বোতাম যেটা ছিঁড়ে গেছিল সেই বিখ্যাত গোয়েন্দার শার্ট ব্যান্ড থেকে যখন তারা ধস্তাধস্তি করছিল জিমির সাথে তাকে গ্রেফতার করার জন্য।
Pulling out from the wall a folding-bed, Jimmy slid back a panel in the wall and dragged out of a dust-covered suit-case.
দেয়াল থেকে একটা ভাঁজ করা বিছানা টেনে এনে, জিমি দেয়ালের প্যানেলটা সড়াল এবং টেনে একটা ধুলো ঢাকা সুটকেস বের করল।
He opened this and gazed fondly at the finest set of burglar’s tools in the East.
সে সেটা খুলল আর প্রাচ্যের সবচেয়ে সুন্দর চোরের প্রয়োজনীয় যন্ত্রপাতির দিকে কোমলভাবে তাকাল।
It was a complete set, made of specially tempered steel, the latest designs in drills, punches, braces and bits, jimmies, clamps, and augers, with two or three novelties, invented by Jimmy himself, in which he took pride.
