Ans. A ‘Sankchinni’ is a female ghost of white complexion. They usually stand at the dead of night at the foot of trees. They look like sheets of white cloth. The word ‘Sankchinni’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Sankhachurni’. They are the ghosts of married Hindu women who wear bangles made from ‘shankha’ or conch shells. They live on trees.

> In the story ‘A Ghostly Wife’, the Sankchinni lived on the boughs of a tree. This tree was on the embankment of the tank near a Brahman’s house.

> One night, the Brahman’s wife went to the tank and accidentally touched the Sankchinni. Angered by the Brahmani, the she-ghost seized her by the throat, climbed on the tree and thrust her into a hole in the trunk. The woman lay there almost dead with fear. The ghost then wore the clothes of the Brahmani and entered the Brahman’s house.

[শাঁখচিন্নি হল শ্বেতবর্ণের মহিলা-ভূত। এরা সাধারণত রাত্রিবেলা গাছের নীচে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে। এরা দেখতে সাদা কাপড়ের চাদরে মতো। ‘শাঁখচিন্নি’ শব্দটি এসেছে সংস্কৃত শব্দ ‘শঙ্খচূর্ণী’ থেকে। এরা বিবাহিত হিন্দু মহিলাদের ভূত যারা ‘শঙ্খ’ বা শাঁখ থেকে তৈরি চুড়ি (শাঁখা) পরে। এরা গাছে বাস করে।

‘A Ghostly Wife’ গল্পে শাঁখচিন্নি একটি গাছের ডালে থাকত। এই গাছটি ছিল ব্রাহ্মণের বাড়ির কাছের দিঘিটির ধারে।

এক রাতে ব্রাহ্মণের স্ত্রী দিঘিতে গেল ও ঘটনাক্রমে তার ছোঁয়া লাগল এক শাঁখচিন্নির সঙ্গে। ব্রাহ্মণীর প্রতি রাগান্বিত হয়ে ভূত তার গলা টিপে ধরে, তারপর গাছে উঠে তাকে গাছের কান্ডের একটি গর্তে ঢুকিয়ে দেয়। মহিলা ভয়ে প্রায় মৃত অবস্থায় পড়ে থাকে। ভূত তখন ব্রাহ্মণীর বস্ত্র পরিধান করে ব্রাহ্মণের বাড়ি প্রবেশ করে।]

Ans. In the story ‘A Ghostly Wife’, a Sankchinni assumed the appearance of the Brahmani.

> One night, the Brahman’s wife went to the tank and accidentally brushed past a Sankchinni. As she touched Sankchinni, the she-ghost seized her and put her in a hole of a tree. The woman lay there almost dead with fear. The she-ghost then wore the Brahmani’s clothes and entered the Brahman’s house.

> The next morning, the mother-in-law found some changes in her daughter-in-law. The hitherto languid and weak woman had become active and prompt. She began to cook and bring everything over in much less time than before. She could stretch her arm quite some distance. But the most astonishing change was that the woman was using her foot as fuel while cooking.

এক রাতে ব্রাহ্মণের স্ত্রী দিঘিতে গেছিল এবং ঘটনাক্রমে একটি শাঁখচিন্নির সাথে তার ছোঁয়া লাগে। শাঁখচিন্নিকে স্পর্শ করার সাথে সাথে সে তাকে ধরে গাছের একটি গর্তে ভরে দেয়। মহিলা ভয়ে প্রায় মৃত অবস্থায় পড়ে থাকে। মহিলা ভূতটি তখন ব্রাহ্মণীর পোশাক পরিধান করে ব্রাহ্মণের ঘরে প্রবেশ করে।

পরদিন সকালে শাশুড়ি মা তাঁর পুত্রবধূর মধ্যে কিছু পরিবর্তন দেখতে পান। এখনও পর্যন্ত অলস এবং দুর্বল মহিলাটি সক্রিয় এবং দক্ষ হয়ে উঠেছে। সে আগের চেয়ে অনেক কম সময়ে রান্না এবং জিনিসপত্র আনতে শুরু করেছে। সে তার হাত দীর্ঘ প্রসারিত করতে পারে। তবে তার সবচেয়ে আশ্চর্যজনক পরিবর্তনটি হল যে রান্না করার সময় মহিলাটি নিজের পা জ্বালানি হিসেবে ব্যবহার করেছিল।]

Ans. The main charm of the folktale ‘A Ghostly Wife’ lies in the strange and peculiar activities of the she-ghost. Enraged by the Brahmani, the she-ghost seized her, put her in the hole of the tree, wore the woman’s clothes and entered the Brahman‘s house. There, her promptness in cooking and bringing things from a distance surprised the mother- in-law. She could stretch her arm to bring a thing from the next room or several yards away in a much less time. One day, there was no firewood in the house. But a strange thing happened; the mother-in-law noticed that her daughter-in-law was cooking by thrusting her foot into the oven as fuel. When the ‘ojha’ placed a piece of burning turmeric under her nose, she screamed aloud and ran away from the room. But under the spell of the ojha, she disclosed, with a strong nasal accent, her identity and what happened to the Brahman’s real wife. Finally, she assured solemnly that she would do no further harm to the Brahman and his family.

[‘A Ghostly Wife’ নামক লোককাহিনিটির মূল আকর্ষণ মহিলা- ভূতটির অদ্ভুত সব কার্যকলাপের মধ্যে রয়েছে। ব্রাহ্মণীর প্রতি ক্রোধান্বিত হয়ে সে তাকে ধরে গাছের গর্তে ঢুকিয়ে দেয়, তারপর ব্রাহ্মণীর পোশাক পরে ব্রাহ্মণের বাড়িতে সে প্রবেশ করে। সেখানে তার রান্না এবং দূর থেকে জিনিস আনার তৎপরতা শাশুড়িকে অবাক করে দেয়। পাশের ঘর থেকে বা কয়েক গজ দূরত্ব থেকে একটা জিনিস আনার জন্য সে তার হাত লম্বা করে বাড়িয়ে দিতে পারত এবং তা অনেক কম সময়ে নিয়ে আসতে পারত। একদিন ঘরে আগুন জ্বালানোর কাঠ ছিল না। কিন্তু একটা অদ্ভুত ঘটনা ঘটল; শাশুড়িমা লক্ষ করলেন যে তার পুত্রবধূ জ্বালানি হিসেবে চুলায় পা ঢুকিয়ে রান্না করছে। ওঝা যখন তার নাকের নীচে জ্বলন্ত হলুদের টুকরো রাখে, সে জোরে চিৎকার করে ঘর থেকে পালিয়ে যায়। কিন্তু ওঝার জাদুমন্ত্রের প্রভাবে সে নাকি সুরের সঙ্গে তার পরিচয় এবং ব্রাহ্মণের আসল স্ত্রীর কথা প্রকাশ করে। অবশেষে সে দৃঢ়ভাবে আশ্বাস দেয় যে সে ব্রাহ্মণ এবং তার পরিবারের আর কোনো ক্ষতি করবে না।]

4. Who is called an ‘ojha’? What role does he play in the story ‘A Ghostly Wife’? [‘ওঝা’ কাকে বলা হয়? ‘A Ghostly Wife’ গল্পে তিনি কী ভূমিকা পালন করেন?]

Ans. ‘Ojha’ is a Bengali word for the exorcist who drives away ghosts from any place or a possessed person. In rural Bengal, the profession of an ‘ojha’ was held in high esteem because of the superstitious beliefs in ghosts.

> In ‘A Ghostly Wife’, the ojha plays the most important role in dissolving the crisis that had overtaken the Brahman and his family. When the activities of the daughter-in-law came under the scanner and her identity was suspected, an ojha was called in. By putting a piece of burning turmeric under her nose and observing her reactions, like screaming and running away, the ojha proved that the daughter-in-law was a ghost or a woman possessed by a ghost. Then the ojha took her under his control and by beating her with slippers, forced her to disclose her identity and what happened to the Brahmani. The Brahmani was brought home. Finally, the ojha released the ghost from his spell and thereby made it possible for the Brahman and his family to live happily thereafter. Thus, the ojha played a vital role in restoring the happiness of the Brahman’s family.

[ওঝা একটি বাংলা শব্দ যা ভূত তাড়ানোর ওস্তাদদের বলা হয়। এঁরা যে-কোনো স্থান বা ভূতে ভর করেছে এমন ব্যক্তির থেকে ভূত তাড়িয়ে দেন। ভূত বা ভূতের প্রতি কুসংস্কারের কারণে গ্রামবাংলায় ওঝার পেশাকে উচ্চ মর্যাদা দেওয়া হত।

‘A Ghostly Wife’-এ ব্রাহ্মণ এবং তার পরিবারের সংকট নিরসনে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন এক ওঝা। যখন পুত্রবধূর কার্যকলাপ চাক্ষুষ করে শাশুড়িমা তার প্রকৃত পরিচয় সম্পর্কে সন্দেহ প্রকাশ করেন, তখন একজন ওঝাকে ডেকে আনা হয়। এক টুকরো পোড়া হলুদ তার নাকের নীচে দেওয়ায় মহিলা-ভূতটি চিৎকার করে পালিয়ে যায়। এই প্রতিক্রিয়া পর্যবেক্ষণ করে ওঝা প্রমাণ করেন যে পুত্রবধূটি একটি ভূত বা তার ওপর ভূতে ভর করেছে। তারপর ওঝা তাকে নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনেন এবং চটি দিয়ে পিটিয়ে তার পরিচয় ও ব্রাহ্মণীর অবস্থা প্রকাশ করতে তাকে বাধ্য করেন। ব্রাহ্মণীকে বাড়িতে আনা হয়। অবশেষে ওঝা ভূতকে তাঁর মন্ত্রের বশ থেকে মুক্তি দেন। এরই ফলে ব্রাহ্মণ ও তার পরিবার সুখে তাদের জীবন কাটাতে পারে। এইভাবে ব্রাহ্মণের পরিবারের সুখ ফিরিয়ে আনতে ওঝা এক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন।]

5. How did the Brahman and his family get released from the sankchinni in ‘A Ghostly Wife’? [‘A Ghostly Wife’ গল্পে ব্রাহ্মণ এবং তার পরিবার কীভাবে শাঁখচিন্নি থেকে মুক্তি পায়?]

Ans. ‘A Ghostly Wife’ is a simple tale about the exploits of a sankchinni and how the Brahman and his family got released from her. The sankchinni assumed the Brahmani’s appearance by wearing her clothes. She went into the house of the Brahman. Neither the Brahman nor his mother doubted her appearance. But the next morning, the mother-in-law observed some changes in her daughter-in-law. She was pleased to discover that her weak daughter-in-law had become more active and prompt than before. But she was very much surprised to find her lengthening her arm to bring anything from a distant place. The mother-in-law reported this to her son and both began to watch her very closely. One day, the mother-in-law was utterly surprised to find that her daughter-in-law using her foot as fuel for cooking. She told her son about the miracle she had seen and both of them identified her as a she-ghost. So they engaged an exorcist (ojha in Bangla) to get rid of the she-ghost. By placing burnt turmeric below her nose, the exorcist first wanted to test if she was indeed a ghost. As the lighted turmeric was taken near her, she screamed aloud and ran away from the room. It became clear that she was either a ghost or a woman possessed by a ghost. She refused to disclose anything when she was asked about her identity. So the ojha took up his slippers to beat her. Then, with a nasal accent, she said that she was a sankchinni. Gradually, the exorcist managed to find out from the ghost that she had thrust the real Brahmani into the hole of the tree. The wife was rescued and brought back. The ghost was then released. In this way, the Brahman and his family were released from the sankchinni.

[‘A Ghostly Wife’ একটি শাঁখচিন্নির কার্যকলাপের এবং তার অত্যাচার থেকে কীভাবে ব্রাহ্মণ ও তার পরিবার মুক্তি পায়, এই ব্যাপারে একটি সহজসরল গল্প। শাঁখচিন্নি ব্রাহ্মণীর পোশাক পরে ও ব্রাহ্মণের গৃহে প্রবেশ করে। ব্রাহ্মণ বা তার মা, কেউই তাকে সন্দেহ করে না। কিন্তু পরের দিন সকালে শাশুড়ি তার পুত্রবধূর মধ্যে কিছু পরিবর্তন লক্ষ করেন। তার দুর্বল পুত্রবধূ আগের চেয়ে খুবই সক্রিয় এবং তৎপর হয়ে উঠেছে-এই দেখে তিনি খুব খুশি হন। কিন্তু তিনি কিছু দূর থেকে একটি পাত্র আনতে তার হাত প্রসারিত হতে দেখে তিনি খুব অবাক হন। শাশুড়ি তাঁর ছেলেকে এই কথা জানান এবং দুজনেই তাকে মহিলা-ভূত বলে চিহ্নিত করে। তাই তার থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়ার জন্য তারা একজন ওঝাকে নিযুক্ত করে। তার নাকের নীচে পোড়া হলুদ রেখে ওঝা প্রথমে পরীক্ষা করে দেখতে চেয়েছিলেন সে আদৌ ভূত কি না। সে যখন চিৎকার করে দৌড়ে পালায়, তখন এটা স্পষ্ট হয় যে সে হয় ভূত নাহলে ভূতে তার ওপর ভর করেছে। তার পরিচয় জানতে চাওয়া হলে সে কোনোকিছু প্রকাশ করতে অস্বীকার করে। এর ফলে তাকে মারতে ওঝা তার চটি হাতে তুলে নেয়। অবশেষে নাকি সুরে সে জানায় যে সে একজন শাঁখচিন্নি। ধীরে ধীরে ভূতের কাছ থেকে ওঝা জানতে পারে যে সে আসল ব্রাহ্মণীকে গাছের গর্তে ভরে রেখেছিল। বউটিকে উদ্ধার করে ফিরিয়ে আনা হয়। এরপর ভূতটিকে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়। এইভাবে ব্রাহ্মণ এবং তার পরিবার শাঁখচিন্নির থেকে মুক্তি পেয়েছিল।]
